MISSISSAUGA – In 2010, a sophomore linebacker sustained a season-ending neck injury in a game against B.C. For his teammate, a physical defect in his neck was uncovered when he made a hit against divisional rival Montreal. Both Argos were sidelined for the remainder of their seasons.

Canadian linebacker Tang Bacheyie worked to rehab but ultimately the club chose to release him on Wednesday. The move will allow him to continue his rehabilitation and, when he’s ready, try to sign with another team. Starting cornerback Willie Middlebrooks filed for retirement after a hit re-aggravated a physical defect in his neck. Doctors gave him devastating news – one more hit could cause him serious injury - and Coach Barker couldn’t, in good conscience, allow him to take the field with so much at stake.

Middlebrooks, who spent three seasons in Double Blue, sustained his injury in the Argos’ second-last regular season game of 2010. Despite a valiant effort to come back, Barker decided it wasn’t worth the risk for his player.

“With the injury he had, one hit could cause damage and I just didn’t want to put him through that or me through that. Having every time the guy goes out there, knowing that with the next hit he may not get back up…” offered Barker.

“[Willie] is a smart guy and has been good with his money. He has a lot of things going on in his life and [retirement] was just the right decision for him.” Barker added.

Bacheyie also attempted a comeback after undergoing surgery midway through last season.  The Argos released him but are hopeful that he can catch on with another club if he decides to continue his career.

“He wanted to come back but I told him I would release him so he can [continue rehab] and try and get another shot,” Barker said.
