MISSISSAUGA -- The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is thrilled to announce that seasoned CFL quarterback, Steven Jyles has been acquired in a trade with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In exchange, the Argonauts sent their first round pick, 4th overall, in the 2011 CFL Canadian Draft and a conditional pick in the 2012 CFL Canadian Draft.
Commented Argonauts’ General Manager & Head Coach, Jim Barker, “Every move we make is about winning Grey Cups and we feel Steven is a player who can help us do that. Jyles is a competitor who adds five years of CFL experience as well as excellent mobility to our quarterback position. He threw 19 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions, and put up career-high numbers before he was injured last season. He underwent surgery to his throwing shoulder this off-season and our medical staff is extremely confident that he’ll be 100% for training camp. We believe Jyles is very much worth the first round pick we gave up to bring him to Toronto and we’re excited to see him compete for the starting position in June.”
Entering his sixth CFL season in 2011, Jyles has worked with some of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the league. He’s played with Ricky Ray in Edmonton, Darian Durant in Saskatchewan and alongside Buck Pierce in Winnipeg. The Louisiana at Monroe product made 11 starts with the Blue Bombers last season and was named the team’s starter after an injury to Pierce. 2010 turned out to be a high-point for the veteran as he completed 196 of 318 passes for 2,804 and 19 TDs. Jyles played two seasons in Saskatchewan (2008-09), primarily as a backup, after being traded from Edmonton. He first joined the CFL with the Eskimos in 2007.
Jyles remarked, “Toronto is a great football team and I’m really excited to be part of the Argonauts organization. I have a lot of respect for my new teammates, whenever we prepared to play the Argos last season we knew we knew we were in for a great football game. I love to play football, and I prepare and play to win every week. I can’t wait to get to Toronto and help my new teammates win games and compete for a championship.”
Jyles played four seasons at Louisiana-Monroe (2002-05) and graduated as the school’s all-time leading passer with his name next to virtually every passing record in the record books. He was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year as a senior, and was selected First-Team All-Sun Belt.
